RAM, random access memory, is a form of data storage. It is allowed to store data to be accessed in any mode. Therefore RAM is a little like hard disc but faster and there are no moving parts. The Macintosh Powerbook uses RAM to store data which can be accessed more quickly and easily. The more byte RAM you installed into your Powerbook, the more speed your Powerbook will run.

The Powerbook G4 used two model of RAM during its type. These two types of Powerbook RAM memory cannot compatible each other. It is the first thing you should consider before buying the right Powerbook G4 RAM. The earlier Powerbook G4 use DDR, and the latest use DDR2. You can check what of your Powerbook type of RAM by using “About this Mac” menu. The phrase DDR SDRAM means DDR, and DDR2 SDRAM means DDR2.

The Powerbook G4 12” model, has one soldered memory either it’s 128 or 256MB and one memory slot that can be upgraded to 1GB PC-2700-SO-DIMM. And for 15” and 17” model that released after Oct 20, 2005 is have two memory slots which use DDR2 and DDR for the earlier model. The specification for this memory RAM (for DDR and DDR2), in general is regarding to the type of SO-DIMM modules, number of memory slot, and maximum byte supported RAM.
Be sure before you buy the Powerbook memory. Its better that you buy from authorized dealer or Macintosh license and have life time warranty. Buying from entrusted party can inflict a financial loss whether at the first the price is lower. Not only that, for some case, your Powerbook can run smoothly for first time, but two months later it can run for no time.

After you buy the memory, further step is installing the device into your Powerbook RAM. For a part of people it is rather complicated. So here are the steps.

First, turn off and unplug the power from your Powerbook then flip your notebook so you can see the backside. Second, take out its battery and the screw that are holding the cover of the memory slot using screwdriver to take-off the cover. And third, install the memory module. One thing you should make sure is that the gold pins are facing down at a 30º angle (It’s should be positioned correctly for the pins, line up the groves on the module with the groves on the slot). And forth, for the last, push the memory module down until the clips snap onto the module. When you turn-on your Powerbook again, you can see that the memory is increased.

RAM can be so important because Application is usually being loaded to your Powerbook RAM, as are files you running on. And when you use the entire available RAM, the system stored the information that supposed to be stored in RAM into your hard disk. When it happens, it seems a serious waiting (not always being showed by hard drive-grinding noise). Then it caused the system run slower because the system using hard disk to store information (RAM can be 100,000 faster than hard disk). So make it sure your Powerbook 12 RAM supported the size of your application. It can be sure that you will get upset if your applications run slower than ever.

Most mini laptops, especially the upscale models such as HP mini 1000, Dell Inspiron and Lenova IdeaPad S10 are much easier to upgrade. But even if you don’t own these pricier models, you can still upgrade your netbook with the right set of screw drivers.

A mini notebook has only two things that can be upgraded; the RAM and the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). You need to find out the specifications on these two things in your netbook and then upgrade them accordingly. DRAM and SRAM are two different kinds of upgraded RAMs while ATA and SATA are different versions of hard disk drives.

Once you know the type of your RAM and HDD and decided on which upgraded version to install, the next step is to locate the RAM and HDD on your netbook. Most manufacturers have these on the backside of the unit; either on the same panel or different panels but insulated from and connected to the unit’s internal circuitry.

You may also need to open up the netbook completely to locate the RAM and HDD, so you would need to keep your screw drivers handy. Most importantly, always switch off the mini laptop before opening the unit.

Now that you’ve located the Ram and/or HDD, remove it carefully and install the upgraded version in the same way as the old ones. You need to be very careful and have a presence of mind while doing this as you don’t want to go back to opening the whole unit all over again.

Once you have installed the upgraded version and secured the screws on the unit, you need to switch on the netbook to reboot it. If it does not boot, it could mean that you have not installed the parts correctly or those upgraded versions are not compatible with your system. So now you would need to reopen the unit and install them again or read the specs on the HDD and/or Ram and find out the compatible versions for your system.

If the RAM and/or HDD are not compatible with your system then you need to recheck the netbook’s system information. To do that, you simply go to the setting tab on the main menu and click on it. It will give you the information on the Ram and HDD of your mini laptop’s system.

It’s not at all difficult to upgrade a mini laptop. But you need to have some basic knowledge on hardware so that you can pick out the right upgraded version for your netbook and install them in the correct way.
