Prospecting is your most profitable choice. The Prospecting skill lets you extract valuable gems from raw ores. If you know which ores produce which gems, and if you know the best sources for those ores (buy them in the Auction House, mine them, trade them for finished gems, whatever), you can practically manufacture gold in quantity.
Gem Cutting is another very profitable Jewelcrafting skill. You simply offer your services cutting gems into the jewels players need. You can run this like an offline business, marketing your services to the other players and charging a small fee for every gem you cut. It takes more interaction with other players than Prospecting does, but can be a great way to get to know people while getting rich.
While it is relatively easy to make money through both Prospecting and Gem Cutting, making the most money for your efforts, and avoiding boredom are something else entirely. Grinding through stacks of ore to find the gems can make you lots of gold, but it can be tedious, and even a money-losing proposition if you don’t know what you’re doing.
