Mod Chip – a Boon for Video Gamers

Not all people will be familiar with the word ‘mod chip’. But you can bet, each and every video game freak will be familiar with the word, especially with respect to Nintendo Wii games. To give a brief introduction about a mod chip- short for Modification chip, it is essentially a small electrical chip which is used to modify or evade the built in restrictions in computers or video game consoles. This is done by exploiting existing interfaces or my manipulating the systems internal soft ware.

These are capable of circumventing host system properties like copy protection, digital rights management, region coding etc so that it becomes possible to run copied games, unlicensed-third party soft ware’s etc. Due to its availability and low cost user-writable media, they are normally used in CD/DVD- based video games.

Designed only to work with one console system or a specific hardware, it consists of one or more ICs or Integrated Circuits along with its discrete parts, all packaged in a printed circuit board or PCB.

Modchips were first introduced with Play Stations developed by Sony computer Entertainment. Though its function was limited to the use of imported and copied game media at that time, nowadays mod chips are available for almost every console system in different variations. They even enable the installation of alternative operating systems to re-purpose the host system as in the case of home theater PCs.

One might wonder whether the usage of mod chips is a legal affair or not. There are a whole lot of laws like DMCA in the USA, the EUCD and Australian Copyright Act which are against the circumvention of copy protections mechanisms. But because of the wide range of applications of a mod chip, some laws can be bent and there are some other laws which allow specific functions of mod chips.
