Adding game content helps to keep sites that write video game reviews, as well as the gamers happy as it keeps the game fresh with new things to do long after the game was originally released. It also keeps achievement whores busy because basically all the content packs come with new achievements.
The way you buy this content is by accessing the online marketplace for your console, whether it’s the Xbox Live Marketplace, or the Playstation Store. You also are required to pay using the specified payment options, e.g. Microsoft Points. However, the major problem for some people is that you have to own the original disk to be able to play the content.
Unfortunately, many people find that once they have traded in the game, brand new content is released. This problem isn’t just restricted to people who want to play the content for the fun of it. This problem isn’t just for people who enjoy playing the new content. People who enjoy getting the maximum amount of achievements for that game find it annoying aswell because the new achievements are added to the game even if you don’t buy the content. For example, if you have 1000/1000 Xbox achievement points on a game, you have 100%, but if new content is released and the points go up to 1000/1500, you now only have 66%, but you haven’t got the content to get those achievements.
This is resulting in many people finding the problem occurs when they no longer have the original game to play the new content. However, this is starting to change for the better as many publishers are starting to release their DLC onto a seperate disk. GTA 4 will be the next company to do this, they are going to releasing their next content pack, along with all their previous packs, onto a standalone game disc. This means that gamers have play the new content without having the GTA 4 game.
The only current downside to this is that companies only really do it once they have a number of packs to release onto disc, whether this will change in the future, we’ll just have to wait and see. Keep an eye out for when video game news sites report a release date for the next installment of GTA 4 game content.
