World of Warcraft – Definitely the top dog when it comes to MMORPGs. World of Warcraft has well over ten million subscribers and continues to grow everyday. This fantasy-based MMORPG broke the mold and has pushed the standard ahead for online role-playing games.
Lord of the Rings Online – Considered to be one of the more popular MMORPGs for casual gamers. Lord of the Rings Online has garnered impressive numbers and reviews after only being out for a few years. There is plenty of solo content and the game has a lot of mainstream appeal.
Eve Online – This MMORPG contains both PvE and PvE, and is in the sci-fi genre. It is well known for its corporate espionage component that often is acted out between in-game guilds but for high, sometimes almost realistic stakes. The game makes extensive use of spaceships and space combat, but also has a land-based portion to it.
Final Fantasy XI – A hit in both the United States and Japan, Final Fantasy XI has brought the series into the online world. The game is extremely group-based and has a ton of content for all types of players.
Warhammer Online – The biggest PvP-based game on this list. Warhammer Online failed to debut as highly as it was anticipated, but the game’s subscriber base has leveled off and its initial growing pains have subsided. The game wasn’t the World of Warcraft “killer” that it was supposed to be, but has still garnered quite a solid reputation and fan support.
City of Heroes / City of Villains – The original superhero MMORPG. City of Heroes was first released years ago and followed up by City of Villains. The two games exist as separate, yet the same games. It has allowed players to play both the hero and villain side in one distinct game. A follow-up game called Champions is looking to be released soon to compete with this series.
There are many other great MMORPGs available online. Some of these other games include Age of Conan, Dark Age of Camelot, The Chronicles of Spellborn, Everquest 1 & 2, and Pirates of the Burning Sea. There will be many other great MMORPGs released in the near future due to the expansion of this increasingly popular gaming niche.
