How Can I Fix My Ps3?

I have a PS3 that I bought from ebay and it has a 250 GB Hard drive. It sometimes has the YLOD problem but when I restart it, it turns on fine. But the problem is, earlier when trying to use it, I was being told that the system could not run because I needed a system update. So I downloaded the update from Sony's website and put it on my flash drive. After the update was downloaded onto my PS3 it attempted to install it but every time it gets to about 43% it stops and says that an error occurred during the update operation and it gives me an error code. It gives me a suggested action of holding the power button until the system beeps, then unplugging the AC power cord from the electrical outlet, wait a few minutes, then restart the system. I did this and it did not work and every time I turn on my PS3 it goes back to the installation screen and tries to install the update again and says how it was canceled previously. What can I do to fix this? Please, I really want to fix this issue and get to using my PS3 for the first time and I don't have the $150 to send it to Sony. Can someone please help me? And I apologize if this is long but I just really need help. Thanks.

Now.for the flash drive make sure you saved it correct on the usb stick it has to be in all caps in the folder
