What is the Best Way to Fix Ps3 Sixaxis Thumb Sticks?

My original Ps3 controller has been stolen and my friend gave me a SIXAXIS one cause he said the the thumb sticks are sticky. I told him I would fix them but im not sure that the brand new thumb sticks will fix the sticky problem. Dose anyone know if new thumb sticks will fix the sticky problem?

Suggestion:

try taking it apart and cleaning it up. Sometimes dust and stuff can accumilate around the base and cause it to stick.
