Red Sorghum: Evocative, beautifully filmed amalgamation drama, black comedy, kid story, fable which journals a most non traditional union between a set of rural lovers throughout the 1920s. The years pass, a new years shows up, and with it materialize Japanese invaders. Cast includes Gong Li, Jiang Wen, Liu Ji, Teng Rijun, and Qian Ming. (91 minutes, 1987)
The Great McGinty: Sturges’ directorial debut (and Oscar winning screenplay) isn’t up to his later comedy classics, however Donlevy is phenomenal as the bum who is put into the governor’s chair by crooked partisans and then blows it all while he tries to be truthful. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, and Louis Jean Heydt. (81 minutes, 1940)
Signpost to Murder: Fugitive from an insane asylum finds refuge in home of a female whose spouse is away. Cast includes Stuart Whitman, Joanne Woodward, Edward Mulhare, Alan Napier, Joyce Worsley, and Murray Matheson. (74 minutes, 1965)
Down Periscope: Maverick naval officer is ultimately given the submarine he requests however it turns out to be a mothballed ruin with a crew that’s not much more superior. Blind Faith: 2 brothers, one a patrol commander and the other a defense attorney, find their relation and their own sense of self esteem as black gentlemen in 1950s America turned upside down while the commander’s child is implicated in a murderer. Tough and striking drama, which opens in the late ’80s, concentrates on the racial separate and unfair due process system. Cast includes Courtney B. Vanee, Charles S. Dutton, Kadeem Hardison, Lonette McKee, and Garland Whitt. (107 minutes, 1998)
Killpoint: Boring, one dimensional action film with cop Fong and agent Roundtree on the track of gun runners. This films is action packed and brutally vicious. Cast includes Leo Fong, Richard Roundtree, Cameron Mitchell, Pile Perforate, and Wish Holy day. (89 minutes, 1984)
