Casper: Casper is a friendly ghost that lives in a haunted house, Whipstaff Manor. The owner of Whipstaff Manor has sent Dr. Harvey, who is accompanied by his daughter Kat, to remove all the ghosts from the house so she can recover the treasure that is supposedly in the old manor. What will be poor Casper’s fate?
Educating Rita: This is an amusing adaptation of Willy Russell’s level play in reference to a youthful working class spouse who desires to better herself, and chooses boozy professor Caine as her mentor. Walters is phenomenal in her film debut performing her role and Caine has one of his best roles as her mentor. Cast includes Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Michael Williams, Maureen Lipman, Jeananne Crowley, and Malcolm Douglas. (110 minutes, 1983)
Born On The Fourth Of July: A true story that chronicles the life of Ron Kovic. A volunteer in the army, Ron does a tour in Vietnam, where he suffers injuries that leave him paralyzed. After his disturbing treatment by the government, and harrowing experiences in VA hospitals, Ron becomes an anti war activist. He feels completely betrayed by the country that he fought for.
The Prince and the Showgirl: Fairly good but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the 1911 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with admirable performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes, 1957)
Mystic River: Friends since their youth Dave, Jimmy, and Sean have a secret they have kept. Dave was kidnapped and sexually assaulted for days. Now in their adult live Jimmies 19 year old daughter has been murdered. Lots of evidence points toward Dave as the killer. Is Dave the killer?
Mrs. Brown: Gratifying drama set in the 1860s. Monarch Victoria Bench has been in grieving for years, following the death of her cherished spouse Albert; living in Windsor Castle, away from London and city life, she only comes out of her shell when her spouse’s believed Highland rider, John Brown Connolly, declines to pamper her. Cast includes Judi Bench, Billy Connolly, Geoffrey Palmer, Antony Sher, Gerald Butler, Richard Pasco, and David Westhead. (103 minutes, 1997)
Basic: While things go awry throughout an armed forces work out, base captain Daly brings in Travolta, the best interrogator he ever had, to query the surviving members of the squad, whose tales don’t add up. Actually a whodunit, this film keeps us guessing, as a good intrigue should. Cast includes John Travolta, Connie Nielsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Daly, Roselyn Sanchez, and Harry Connick. (2003 minutes, 1995)
A Good Woman: Strange rendition of Oscar Wilde’s Woman Windermere’s Fan, which has been filmed a few times over the years, set in Italy instead of England and updated from the 1890s to the 1930s. A number of Wilde’s British characters now are Americans. Cast includes Helen Seek, Scarlett Johansson, Milena Vukotic, Stephen Campbell Moore, Mark Umbers, Tom Wilkinson, and Diana Hardcastle. Old School: Three friend now in their thirties long for the good old days. They want to go back to their college days. They decide to start an off campus frat house, and live out their college days again.
