Belle of the 90′s: Mae struts, harmonizes ‘My Old Flame,” and heats up a gallery of admirers in entertaining illustration of Western humor. Cast includes Mae West, Roger Pryor, Johnny Mack Brown, Warren Hymer, and Duke Ellington Orchestra. (73 minutes, 1934)
The General: One of Keaton’s best silent films, setting comedy contrary to real Civil War tale of stolen train, and Union spies. Not as fanciful as other Keaton films, although beautifully finished. Cast includes Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Glen Cavender, Jim Farley, and Joseph Keaton. (100 minutes, 1984)
Patton: Milestone in biographies finds Scott vivid as offbeat, radiant General George Patton, whose temper often interrupts with his request throughout WW2. Malden comparably impressive as General Omar Bradley in intelligently written, finely wrought biographical battle drama. Cast includes George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Stephen Youthful, Michael Hefty, Frank Latimore, James Edwards, Lawrence Dobkin, Michael Bates, and Tim Considine. (169 minutes, 1970)
My Science Project: Laughless, often tasteless comedy in reference to high school kids who discover an alien gadget that can create a time and space warps. Cast includes John StockwelI, DanielIe Von Zerneck, Fisher Stevens, Raphael Sbarge, Dennis Hopper, Barry Corbin, Ann Wedgeworth, and Richard Masur. (94 minutes, 1985)
La Nuit de Varennes: Clever historical legend has such renowned entities as Casanova and Thomas Paine cross roads at the time of the French Rebellion. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Jean-Louis Barrault, Hanna Schygulla, Harvey Keitel, and Jean-Claude Brialy. (133 minutes, 1982)
Soapdish: Farcical comedy in reference to a soap opera monarch who’s trailing her clutch–on the show, and her life. Field and Kline are a treat to watch playing larger than life characters, however Whoopi is trashed, Downey is miscast, and the script (by Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman) imagines “anxious” equals “funny.” Cast includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, Teri Hatcher, Paul Johansson, Costas Mandylor, Stephen Nichols, Kathy Najimy, and Ben Stein. Downstairs: Crackling, adult drama in regards to a heel who rests and cajoles his way from one prosperous home to a different-utilizing both the mistresses of the homes upstairs and the servants downstairs. Gilbert transfers a bold acting job that more than some other reclaims his maligned notoriety as a “talkie” performer. Cast includes John Gilbert, Paul Lukas, Virginia Bruce, Hedda Basket, Reginald Owen, and Olga Bafamilyova. (77 minutes, 1932)
