Starcraft 2
Starcraft 2 is an unreleased real time strategy game that has been many years in the making. Since the release of the original starcraft title nine years ago, the game has built a very solid fan base. The first installment is one of the most successful titles in video game history with over nine million copies sold worldwide.
Starcraft 2 is currently in beta mode with a few thousand approved testers working out any problems and balance issues the game may have. There are three main races in the game, which is exactly like the first release. Blizzard has decided to remain with the original three races in the end. So we will be seeing the Terran, Zerg and Protoss race back to do battle with each other once more.
Eventually, the game will be named Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty. Unlike the first title, part 2 will see the campaign focusing on one race per release. Wings of Liberty will tell the story of the Terran race. Two other expansion packs called the Heart of the Swarm and the Legacy of the Void will each tell the stories of the Zerg and Protoss respectively.
Each available race will likely reprise the roles they had in the initial game. The Zerg will have emphasis on expansion while the Terran remain a tricky and rather defensive race to play. The Protoss on the other hand, produce some of the best units in the game. However, they are very costly.
Some units that fans have grown to love are coming back in Starcraft 2. The Protoss have their zealots (with some upgrades), high templars (Psionic Storm) and Archons. Units such as Dragoons, Carriers and scouts have been replaced with new units that perform more or less the same role.
Starcraft 2 also sees the Zerg retain their hydralisk, zerglings and mutalisk but also have some new units that provide an interesting angle in terms of strategy. Hydralisk are now harder to build as they are higher up the production chain.
The terrans still have their marines and siege tanks. Only this time they have a slew of upgrades for their units and medics. Blizzard has since found from Beta testing that the Terran race is still rather weak and may be unbalanced at this point.
