Although there are numerous games consoles on the market one of the most popular is the Xbox 360, which is manufactured by Microsoft. The Xbox was Microsoft’s first video game console and since its release it has undergone several technology advances. The Xbox 360 was the second model, which was released in 2005 with more features than the original Xbox, but unfortunately it has suffered several problems with its hardware since its launch. The most common problems are the 3-red light error and overheating.
The 3-red light error refers to the three blinking red lights in the power ring when there is an error. They are basically the signal of a problem with the console. When an error occurs the lights around the power button change from green to red, and they are a warning sign. They are now infamously called the Red Rings of Death!
There could be several reasons that cause the red light error but one of the most reported is overheating, which happens when the heat sinks aren’t able to cool the hot air properly near the processor. This can cause the processor to fail. The overheating can be due to a number of things, one being an increase in power consumption by the intercooler that leads to the motherboard conducting larger current through the circuit. Otherwise overheating could be due to a bad chip component attached to the motherboard.
Overheating can also cause the GUI to fail, which is when you will see the 3-red light error. When you see the three blinking red lights in the power ring you may also get an error message on your screen at the same time. The error message might be E74 or something else.
There are some measures you can take to prevent the red light error from occurring in the first place. One of them is to make sure there is enough air circulating around the motherboard to keep it cool, so that it doesn’t overheat. If you can maintain a constant temperature for a long period you shouldn’t experience the error.
If you are one of the unlucky ones and you get the 3-red light error there are a couple of things you can do. You can send your console off to Microsoft and wait weeks for it to be returned, or you can save time and a load of cash and repair it yourself.
