thanks very much
Suggestion:
It sounds as though you have not downloaded the latest firmware update. This update is to remove the ability to put a second OS (operating system) such as Linux, on your PS3. If you don't do this update, you will not be able to sign in to PSN, so on your XMB (onscreen menu) scroll left, and find "system updates" click on that, and update your firmware, this should fix the problem.
If you have installed Linux on your PS3 (you'll know if you have, it's quite difficult to do) then make sure you back up any data that you have via Linux, because you will not be able to use Linux after the update.
Not being able to go online, is not likely to have anything to do with the hard drive. If you have already updated your firmware and that is not the problem, then it is more likely to do with your broadband connection. (this is my weak point, so you would need to ask a question about how to fix your broadband connection, and you would need to give as much information about what broadband you have, what type of router, weather you use WiFi or not and so on, and someone should be able to help you with that)
If after investigating the above possibilities, you find you still want to change your hard drive, you are welcome to email me and I'll be glad to help you. I upgraded my own hard drive a while ago:)
