Which Ps3 Model Has Ps2 Backwards Compatibility?

I'm geting a PS3 for my birthday and I really like PS2 games and PS3 games. But I'm confused which model has backwards compatibility. Is it the old fat version or the new slim? Please help!

Suggestion:

not one of these other answers is correct , although some are partially right
for model numbers of ps2 compatible ps3 systems see the http://us.playstation.com website
they had 3 models that were ps2 compatible , all discontinued by early 2008
the 20 gig ( no wifi , 4 usb ports on the front ) the 60 gig ( wifi , flash card readers , 4 usb ports and chrome front ) and the 80 gig ( wifi , 4 usb ports and card reader ) sold bundled with motorstorm or mgs4 .
no others are ps3 compatible , not the slim or other 'fat' systems .

Unfortunately, they stopped manufacturing the ones with backwards compatibility a long time ago. =( The only way you'll be able to get one is if you find one used. The new slims definitely don't have backwards capability, and some of the older larger versions don't have it either. It's only the very originals (60 gigs) that have excellent backwards compatibility as far as I know.

I think it was the first version, cause I have a new slim and I don't think I can play PS2 games unless I update the operating system, apparently the update should allow backward compatibility. I think Sony left the capability to play PS2 games so people would still buy the PS2 to play the games.

Only the first 80gb model and first 160 gb model had that. They were the ones with the chrome and the four usb ports. However the xbox 360 is compatible for most xbox games if you have any of those. You could possibly find one of those older models at gamestop. The thing is they cost just as much as a new slim does. Just go with the slim and keep your ps2

Obviously in ps3 slim.

ps 3 slim is better. Because its have more graphics and more free online games.

PS3 Slim Pros:
- More affordable $299 price;
- slimmer, more compact design with quieter operation;
- all games in high-definition; easy-to-use interface;
- doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player;
- built-in Wi-Fi;
- HDMI output with 1080p support;
- built-in Web browser; free online gaming service.

Ps3 Slim Cons:
- Lacks backward support for PS2 games;
- no infrared port means non-Bluetooth universal remotes aren't compatible;
- online gaming, media, and commerce options still aren't as fully developed as Xbox Live, though they're getting better.

backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows on NTSC systems:

20GB (4 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) – YES
60GB (4 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) – YES
80GB with 4 USB slots (fat, no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) – YES
40GB (2 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) – NO
80GB with 2 USB slots (fat, no longer in production) – NO
160GB (2 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) – NO
120GB/slim (2 USB slots) – NO
250GB/slim (2 USB slots) – NO
any other up coming PS3's – NO

PAL systems only have one backwards compatible system, and that's the 60GB.

THAT'S 4 SYSTEMS THAT ARE IN FACT COMPATIBLE WITH PS2 GAMES!!! NOT 1 SYSTEM, NOT 2, 4!!!

in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.

and as you can see, there are 3 systems that are fat, but can NOT play PS2 games. just because the system is fat does NOT mean it can play PS2 games.

ALL PS3s play PS1 games.

the download that others are referring to is for the PS3s that already are backwards compatible. downloading it to a non-backwards compatible PS3 will do NOTHING but take up space on your hard drive! it will NOT make your PS3 play PS2 games!!!

"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_sid=1P9bCDwj

I dare anyone to steal my answer again. this is MY answer. I took the time to type this all up. yes, every time someone asks this question, I do copy and paste. but I'm copying MY work, MY answer.

The older 20GB and 60GB versions were PS2 compatable. The bad thing about these older molders were many of them still had plenty of bugs in them. Just buy a slim and a connector that allows to easily switch from your PS3 to PS2 it'll save you a headache.

60 gig model

the old like 60 gb models
