Suggestion:
it depends on which 80GB you are talking about as there are 2 versions of the 80GB.
80GB with 4 USB slots (fat, no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) – YES
80GB with 2 USB slots (fat, no longer in production) – NO
the backwards compatible 80GB uses software emulation, therefore it does not play as many PS2 games and the NTSC 60GB and the 20GB which use hardware emulation (think of it as having a PS2 inside the PS3. the 20GB and NTSC 60GB are kinda like that).
if it has 4 USB slots, yes it can play PS2 games. if it has 2 USB slots, no.
all PS3s play PS1 games.

"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_sid=1P9bCDwj

it depends on when you bought it. The first 80GB were simply 60GB with a bigger hard drive. after a while they took out the PS2 guts. the only way to know is to check.
PS1 games play better than they do on the PS2. PS2 games generally aren't compatible though so best get a PS2 if you haven't got one already
Contrary to a previous answer, the 80GB is not 'The 60GB with a bigger HDD'
The 60Gb has the Emotion Engine (heart of the PS2) built in that allows alomst complete compatibility with PS2 games, where as the 80GB uses software to emulate the PS2, this allows it to play roughly 87% of PS2 games.
There are 2 different versions of the 80GB PS3. If the one you are referring to has 4 USB ports, it will play some PS2 games. If it has 2 USB ports, it will not play any.
if it has 4 usb ports, thats the one that plays ps2 games.
