Can ps2 games be played on the ps3 slim?

Suggestion:
The "download" that the other answers are referring to is something for backwards compatible models. It does NOT make your PS3 compatible with PS2 games.
The 120GB slim will not play PS2 games. Reason being is because it lacks any type of PS2 hardware on its motherboard.
And to answer your other question, the PS3 was very expensive to make and sell due to so much hardware in it. Therefore, they cut PS2 compatibility to reduce manufacturing costs since the PS2 is basically still on the market.
All PS3s do play PS1 games, however.
