The older version of the ps3 plays them, but the new(ish) ps3 slim does not.
Not all PS3 consoles can play PS2 games. Currently the only Playstation 3 model that can play Playstation 2 and the original Playstation games is the 80 GB model. The 40 GB PS3 will not play PS2 games but will play some PSone games.
The older model PS3’s that are no longer being made could also play PS2 and PS1 games they are the 20 GB and the 60 GB model but those are no longer in production.
