Suggestion:
Although this has been asked many times I will break it completely down for you.
The following ps3's play ps2 games
first off I will point out all ps3's that play ps2 games are no longer in production.
All have chrome on them with 4 USB slots and a lift up flap with micro sd/ cf slot and sd slot underneath. Now for the list
*20gb first gen ps3 no built in wifi
*60gb first gen used ps2 hardware to play ps2 games
*60gb second gen used software emulation to play ps2 games bundled with motorstorm and another game I can't recall
*80gb third gen used software emulation to play ps2 games bundled with MGS4
this last mentioned ps3 was stopped in production in 2007
Since then no ps3 has been made that can play ps2 games
The 40gb new 80gb no chrome 2 USB slots the 160gb the 320gb and so on are not backwards compatible with ps2 games

Technically, all you need to play PS2 games is a PS2 itself.
Joking aside, the 20, 60, and 80 GB models do have PS2 backwards compatibility. They all have 4 USB ports, so look for a PS3 with 4 USB ports if you want PS2 b/c.
the 20, 60 and 80Gb with 4USB ports play PS2 games.
The 20g also played PS2 games as well as the 80g bundled with Metal Gear Solid or Motorstorm.
You need a 20GB, 60GB, or 80GB with 4 usb ports, and downloading the PS2 system data doesnt make a slim play ps2 games.
Back then yes a new program has been released go to store add ons then go under p and there shuld be ps2 system data
