Suggestion:
the slims are NOT compatible with PS2 games. PERIOD! it says so right on the box! (if you bought a brand new one, not a used one).
the download that you are referring to is for the PS3s that already are backwards compatible. downloading it to a non-backwards compatible PS3 will do NOTHING but take up space on your hard drive! it will NOT make your PS3 play PS2 games!!!
"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_sid=1P9bCDwj

You can not make backward compatible PS3s backward compatible. There are no downloads to make a non-backward compatible PS3 play PS2 games.
The PS2 Data you downloaded from the PSN Store is for PS3s that can play PS2 games. In fact, the download is to allow you to play games that require an HDD to play, specifically Final Fantasy XI. Basically, the PS2 Data download from the PSN Store allows you to play Final Fantasy XI on a backward compatible PS3, it does not allow you to play PS2 games, and it does not do anything additional for PS3s that can play PS2 games, except allow the play of FF XI.
Not only is the data not compatible with the 40GB PS3, but it is not compatible with the newer 80GB PS3, 120GB PS3 slim, or the 250GB PS3 slim. The only PS3s that can use the PS2 Data is the 20GB, 60GB, and Limited Edition 80GB MotorStorm and MGS4 Bundle PS3s.
If you want to play PS2 games, you will need a PS2, or one of the old backward compatible models stated above.
