Suggestion:
First off, you must know if your PS3 is backwards compatible. If it is not, you won't be able to make it play the PS2 games.
If your system is backwards compatible, it will have 4 USB slots on the front. If it is not, it will only have 2.
If you do indeed have a backwards compatible system, insert the disc and wait. If it does not read, the disc may be too scratched or dirty to work.

The 40g PS3 does not play PS2 games and there is currently no way to make it play them either.
You can't so buy a PS2..
Or use the PS2 you still got laying around! I do!
